Jackson

He is turning into such a gentleman.(Sometimes) The other day he ran around to my truck door and said, "my help you out Mamma. " And he grabbed my hand tried to hand me out of the truck. It was super cute.
The other day we were singing "you are holy, you are holy, you are holy seated on the throne of my life" and I said , "Jack you can sing this." He looks at me and says Holy Cow! :) It was so funny.
Today, after exercising, I let him walk on the treadmill and asked him if he wanted to be done. "No Mamma, give me two more seconds." (Have I mentioned he is two and a half?) There are so many things that he says that are funny and I try to remember them, but alas, I don't! I will try to be better.

Parenting

What makes a good parent? What choices do you have to make to fit that mold? And what in tartnation does that mold look like? I was totally sucked into reading a LONG article on vaccinations and basically the stupidity of people who don't vaccinate. I also found another blog about why there are those of us who question the establishment and don't vaccinate our children. It made me reexamine my motives and reasons for not vaccinating.

Here are the blogs.
Pro vaccinate: http://bostonwed-murakami.blogspot.com/2013/09/vaccination-laypersons-perspective_26.html?m=1

Anti vaccinate:http://www.modernalternativemama.com/blog/2013/08/26/monday-health-wellness-why-the-anti-vaccine-movement-exists/

My initial reaction when reading pro vax stuff is instant distrust and anger at being called irresponsible, ignorant, neglectful, stupid, unwise etc etc etc. It pisses me off that the immediate response of so many is that "you idiot, you believe false information and are going to not only kill your child, but all the people with weakened immune systems!"
My reasons for not vaccinating?

  1. I think that part of the reason my mom felt not to vaccinate us was because of me. I have many auto immune system disorder markers. Skin issues, allergies, and digestive issues. - perhaps if she had immunized me, I would be that one in a million person who's life is destroyed by complications. And so because those auto immune diseases are in fact hereditary, I'm no comfortable risking MY children being that one in a million. I'm sorry, it's not my job to be the mother of all the kids in the US. It's my job to do what I think it right for my two.
  2. I seriously don't trust the established policy on vaccinations because of the enormous money behind it. When there is SO much money in any area there is greed and power and I don't believe that those people making the decisions on what vaccinations are necessary, are not influenced by nothing more then money.
  3. I don't trust that all the scientist doing all the research telling me that it's best to give my children these vaccinations are really looking out for my wellbeing or that of my kids more then the wellbeing of their research projects, their jobs and their livelihoods.
  4. I'm not even close to being able to read and understand study after study after study of information on this subject and being told that "googling" it is not good enough and reading studies on the internet aren't good enough and by the way you can only know enough to make a decision by going to med school and reading enough medical journals and studies (and understanding what the heck they are saying) and paying for subscriptions to medical journals etc etc...  I don't have any way to know what is a valid study and what isn't. I don't have enough time, money or energy to get so versed in all the science that I actually am educated about EXACTLY what vaccination's benefits and harms are. All I have is some information that I have found and my instinct as a mother.
  5. No I don't trust doctors. I'm sorry they are just people and often times too busy to give a damn about me or my issues or my concerns with their established protocol. I've had SO many experiences of the ignorance of doctors who don't try to find out the real problem, but only treat symptoms that I have NO faith in some pediatrician telling me that "no, no, everything will be great and dandy when you inject your two month old with viruses!"
Those are some of my reasons, though not totally extensive as I don't dare quote any of the information that I've found because it's bound to be debunked as totally false and ridiculous. But I can't quiet the fear that if I do go ahead and vaccinate, I'll be doing the wrong thing, so I'm not going to until I feel otherwise.

I also read this article which is a really good reminder that we shouldn't be parenting while comparing with everyone else..

Potty Training

Where do we start? Jackson is so aggressively uninterested that it makes it hard to even want to try to get him into it.
We have been nudging him ever so gently to sit on the potty. Last night he actually pooped on the potty, but I think it was more of a matter of him having diarrhea and happening to be sitting on the potty then actually feeling the urge and making the connection.
We did a big party for him, so hopefully that will encourage a return performance.
These are my thoughts for how to proceed from here.

  • Get a goody bag: Fill it with special treats and let him decorate it.
  • Get a Sticker Chart: Get fun, truck & airplane & train stickers and let him help decorate it.
  • Decorate the potty: Let him go wild with the potty.
  • Get fun pull ups: make them interesting
I am going to try the above and see if we can't generate some interest.

As far as Emma goes, she is thriving and doing wonderfully. She is still nursing six times a day which seems like a lot to me. But I don't remember what I was doing with Jackson at that point. I am also feeding her oatmeal twice a day and will probably increase it sometime in the next month. I LONNNNNGGG for the day when I can put her to bed at 8 or 8:30 and actually have an evening.  I think part of that is going to be not letting her sleep so long in the morning, but it's SOOO nice to have a little bit extra sleep on the rare days when I get to sleep in. She is getting more dexterous all the time and can now grab things and pass things back and forth. She can also sort of sit up with a little help and she's rolling ALL OVER THE PLACE!

As for me, like I said, I LOONNNGG for a little break. Just a day or even a night and morning to sleep until I wake up on my own. I am weary of always being needed and having demands on my time, body and energy. But really, it's not all that bad, I'm just going into the long, dark and cold of winter in Alaska and wish I didn't already feel to drained and TIRED!
We'll make it and I really don't want Emma to get big too fast. Tonight she was sitting next to Nathaniel and flirting away with him. It was so cute. She is probably the most friendly, smily baby ever. :)

Five months

It's been five months and change since I pushed this little darling out.

Isn't she beautiful? I love her so much! She is 16.8 lbs & getting close to 26" long. She's sweet and smiles and coos and makes herself friendly to all.
I am so thankful that she is here with us. Making our family that much more wonderful.
Favorite things she does? She reaches up and grabs my nose and face while nursing. She'll grab my hand and put it where she wants it. She rolls and laughs around the floor. She'll wave her legs around and scream in pure enjoyment. She's always ready to laugh and smile and her little grins make my days so much more enjoyable. She is now eating oatmeal & apple and enjoying it VERY much! She is eating it twice a day, though she still randomly wakes up in the middle of the night to eat.

Jackson is growing in leaps and bounds and the way he talks is astonishing to everyone. The other night he put his arms around me and told me "my holding you back mamma" He talks about everything. Recently it's been all about the owls and the moose daddy shot. He wan't us to make up and sing songs all about daddy shooting the moose and the owls in the trees.
He's also being exceedingly naughty. He is pushing every boundary and asserting himself ALL. THE. TIME! It's so hard to remember that he is two and I am an adult and I am not going to argue and fight with a two year old like another two year old. I have been trying to remember to teach in my discipline and not just bully because I am frustrated.
He is so creative and such a great boy. It takes me by surprise every time he says "Please Mamma" and "tank qou" without prompting. It gives me hope that all the work it actually being effective!
I love my life and my family. That's not to say that at times all I want to do is sleep or go sit in a quiet room by myself and not have anyone need anything from me, but I do love my little family so much!

And here we all are.

And more pics of Emma because she is too stinkin CUTE!

"Water Mommy!"

I keep trying to remember to get on here and write down the funny things Jackson says during the day and then I finally do and of course I can't remember ANY of them.
Though every time he get's in trouble or get's hurt he always cries... "water mommy, waterrrrr!" I think it's kind of funny.
I also LOVE that he call the trampoline a bumpaline... because he calls jumping, pumping... and peep for jeep.. :) These things make my heart happy.
He also really loves his footed jammies right now. He loves to zip them up and unzip them over and over again. What a kid.
Today I really missed him and just wanted to give him hugs and kisses. And then I got home and he was so revved up that I got irritated quickly. How stupid to want to be with your kid all day and then just get irritated when you actually do come home.
I must learn how to be tired and not irritable!

4 Months

So it's been about four and a half months since my world was rocked and my whole life changed yet again. It's been an incredible challenge to adapt and switch all my routines for new ones that I have to figure out and come up with.
But that is really common with kids. It's no longer about me, it's about them. I am so glad I have both my kiddos, but wow, it's a lot of work to juggle LIFE!

I know for sure that I am not ready to do this again any time soon. One of my friends just had her baby last night and another of my friends is in the MIDDLE of having her baby today and wow, all I can say is that just thinking about having to go through labor and delivery again, makes me want to cry. Seriously. It was the most intense and truth to tell, horrible experience of my life. Not the birthing, but the labor. I was rocked to my roots. I felt like I was so out of control and so helpless to deal with the pain, that I seriously was almost off my rocker. But then I got into the shower and everything calmed down. I felt her drop, I felt my body relax, and then a couple of pushes later, there she was. Though don't let that description lull you into thinking that pushing is like lifting a heavy weight or any other sort of strenuous activity you can think of. It's like your body ripping itself apart sort of pushing.
I loved that after part this time though. I laid there with her naked and warm on my chest, cuddling her, getting to know her, seeing her for the first time. I loved the quiet of just having Dan and the midwives around and the shear bliss of knowing that the really hard part was over with finally. No more waiting.

But then we went home and I had after pains like I was in the middle of transition again and I could barely cope with that. And then nursing was a living hell AGAIN. I went through the emotion of realizing it was as bad and worse as the first time and that I was in for literally months of pain seven times a day every day. And it was. And this time I had cracks as well as thrush and a bad latch. Man it sucked! I was too tired and in too much pain to deal with Jackson and so I had guilt for not being the mother he needed through this massive transition in his life as well as hating to feed my little baby, who was making the transition to being alive. And let's face it, that's a hard transition. Lots of crying and not wanting to be put down and not knowing how to settle.
It was a very hard three months. Plus I had a family wedding that I was very much a part of. My sister in law got married and my husband was in the wedding. I felt fat and tired and not able to be as a part of the whole festive time as I would have been if I didn't have a baby. Plus Dan was really bummed out not to be able to spend more time with all the family that came. It was not easy. AND then my sister got married and I was the maid of honor, so I was all kinds of responsible for lots of things. It was rough, and I am glad I don't have to repeat that. Postpartum depression. It's a fact and it's not fun to deal with, but it's also not impossible to work through and leave behind.
It's been a rough four months, but now that things are starting to settle a bit and I am getting into the swing of being the mom of TWO beautiful, wonderful, sparkling with life children. It's going to be a grand adventure!

Rocked

Wow, so much happening and so much to think about recently. I've been thinking about when someone you've respected and looked up to, becomes someone who no longer should be respected. How do you respect someone who is no longer respectable? It sucks to have those people in your lives change completely from who you used to know, to someone quite different
It hurts too. I feel heavy and sad about this situation and there isn't any help for it that I can see. Unless of course God moves.
Uhg.
I also just read an article which made me think about how I have been with Jackson recently. It's so easy to get into a rut of yelling and being frustrated with him instead of being creative in the ways that I try to teach him. It's so easy to get too busy to take the time to give him the attention that he needs. AAAK! Being a mom is so different then what I had thought. Really it's just that I HAVE to think about it the majority of my waking hours, which requires a total rewiring of my brain. It is so easy to be self centered and to try to fit children into a convenient space in my life, instead of making them the WHOLE space and fitting everything else into any available slot.
Here is the article. http://creativewithkids.com/the-day-i-realized-i-was-bullying-my-kids/

And in other news, Emma is hysterical. She is such a cute little button! WOW! How did I manage to have such cute kids!

I'll post a picture when I am at home.

Things I Like

Well it's been a couple of rough days as both kids were sick and I didn't get to sleep much and Jackson is being a typical two year old. He is high energy and needs constant attention! He is a menace! I turn my back for a second and come back to find him "washing" his stuffed animals in the sink. :) But I LOVE how creative he is getting.
So here are some things that I like/love about being a mom.

  • I love chubby arms around my neck.
  • I love wet kisses on my face.
  • I love grins when I tickle bellies.
  • I love snuggles at bed time.
  • I love snuggles while BF.
  • I love watching them discover the world.
  • I love playing with them.
  • I love baby belly laughs.
  • I love two year old belly laughs.
  • I love noisiness though it gets old.
  • I love downy heads.
  • I love bath time and good smelling soap.
  • I love wet babies in towels.
  • I love tiny little fingers.
  • I love little hands gripping my fingers.
  • I love bigger hand holding mine.
  • I love tiny feet!
  • I love sweet smelling babies.
  • I love the conversation of my two year old.
  • I love late night cooing with my baby.
There are actually quite a few more, but those are the ones I can think of right this minute. Yesterday Jack pinched his finger a bit in the door and came crying up stairs. I asked him what happened and he said, "Hurt my finger Mamma, in the doorrr.." I said sorry and laughed and bent over because he was so cute and he grinned at me and copied me bending over and chuckling. It was fun.
These things make the waking in the middle of the night, and the shear exhaustion of raising babies worth it.

Here are my munchkins.

Sick Kids!!!!

Wow, SO tired. Both my kiddos are sick and I spent the last five hours of the night listening to poor Jack cough his lungs up. I gave him stuff and tried to help, but he was asleep and didn't respond to any of the meds. Oh well. I shall try to prop my eyes open for the rest of the day.
Last night Jackson did tell me, "No Mamma, only Danny tickle my back." Apparently the back tickling is reserved for dad and dad alone.. :)

Rolling Over

Today Emma started rolling over. She is getting so big so fast! She also likes to try to sit up when she is in her bouncy chair.
We measured her today too, and she is almost 26 inches long. It's always hard to realize how fast time goes by with these little ones. One day they are in your belly the next you are trying to remember how tiny they were when they first came out.
It was so hard to deal with all the pain of nursing for those first two plus months that I fear I failed to really focus on her. But that's fine. This is really my favorite stage anyway. She is SO talkative and lively and she is such a sweet girl. She sleeps great, eats fast, interacts wonderfully. The only slight draw back with her is she spits up a lot. But we couldn't have a completely perfect baby right? :)
Jackson is also growing at an alarming rate. He is now talking in complete sentences and forming original thoughts. Today he asked me " Hold the rock for a minute momma"? He picks up all these phrases and uses them. It's amazing to see how he changes.
My mom suggested to me the other day that I make sure to settle him and connect with him after I've been gone all day at work. I think it might help with some of his behavioral issues when we are at the dinner table.

Jackson's Birth

Jackson’s Birth Story

By his mother

Thanksgiving 2009 was a day of heartbreak. After all the excitement of a new pregnancy, I found out that it wasn’t viable. Ectopic. A horrible one in one hundred condition meaning the baby didn’t come all the way through the fallopian tube. It lodged elsewhere and began to grow, causing bleeding and cramping.
The process of that first pregnancy was very difficult to go through, but I wasn’t brought to my knees. That came later.
After having numerous ultrasounds and exams and much prodding, it was decided that I needed to have a D&C. If you’ve never read about the procedure, don’t. It’s painful just to read about. It was excruciating to go through. But when I found out that the ordeal was not over, but that I needed to go back up and get a shot, I felt far worse.

We finally had an end to the pain and disappointment after a week and a half of traveling back and forth to Fairbanks. I thought that after three months, we would try again and presto chango I would be pregnant and skipping on my merry way.
Little prepared was I for the battle ahead.

After I was deemed to be fit and sound, I started charting to get a good feel of when the best chances for pregnancy were. Cycle one came and went and though disappointed, I wasn’t much alarmed. Then cycle two came and went. A little frustrated I bent my mind on the charting, determined that if I could just get the timing perfect, it was bound to happen. Alas, cycle three came and went in a flurry of emotional distraughtness and sobbing in the bathroom in the early hours. Four then five came and passed with no missed period, not morning sickness, no longed for BFP.

It was getting to the point of obsession when I decided I just needed a break. Dan didn’t understand how difficult the process of conceiving was for me and so it also put a strain on our relationship. We were going to Ft. St. John in July and I decided that it was a great time to just not chart, not think about getting pregnant and just have a break.

Of course that is always easier to say then to do. I didn’t chart, but I thought about it constantly. We ended up getting pregnant on the way home, but of course we didn’t know that. It was a huge battle that I came home too, and I don’t think I’ve ever fought depression as hard in my life as I did for those two weeks.

But David and Olivia were getting married and Dan was the best man so there was lots of work to be done and other things to think about. The day of Olivia’s shower, I remember having lots of cramping. I thought for sure I would be starting my period any minute and was just wishing it would hurry up and start so I could begin charting again. Three days later I knew I was late, but didn’t want to jinx it by testing. So I was cautiously optimistic. Then Thursday came around and because I could stay home and test in the morning after everyone left, I decided to take the leap and pee on the stick.
And wouldn’t you know it, the line came up immediately and was a vibrant blue. I was so jazzed I couldn’t go back to bed and was beaming all day. A week later I took another one and the line was even brighter blue. So we were pregnant!

At seven weeks, I went in to have a ultrasound because of the history of ectopic, they want to test early. I was so nervous going in. What if there was no heartbeat? What if it wasn’t in the uterus again. We went in and laid down on the table and then the screen turned on and the probe went up and there was our tiny baby with a very strong heartbeat.

The weeks and months went by slowly, truth to tell and I really didn’t think the 40 weeks would ever come to an end. I loved feeling the baby roll again and kick and my favorite of all was when I would rub my belly, he would press himself into my hand. He was SO active in the womb. One day late in the pregnancy, like 37 weeks late, he did two full circuits in the womb. I felt his head moving all around. I had Jen check to make sure it was his head, and sure enough, that boy did NOT want to stay down.

I loved not knowing what I was going to have. It was so fun to have that to look forward to as well. And then at thirty-nine weeks, SICKNESS! Everyone was getting sick and I succumbed. I was SO sick. I was up for a few days because I couldn’t sleep and one night I had a fever and as I was getting into the shower in the middle of the night because I thought the hot air would help, I started shivering so badly that it triggered contractions.
I was so afraid I was going to go into labor, unable to breath and having no strength at all. But, the body knows best. I finally went in to the clinic to make sure I didn’t have Pneumonia, and got antibiotics for the bronchitis that I did have.

My due date came and went and as I SLOWLY got better, I started getting more and more impatient. I also was supposed to always sit forward with my legs splayed open, hoping that this would help the position of the baby. I was so uncomfortable and wanted to be normal again SOO badly. One night I burst into tears because I was sick to death of having to turn sideways to hug my husband.:)

My mom was here and though I was so glad to have her with me, I felt like a bug under a microscope. Being watched to see if anything moved.
I was having braxton hicks for about a week and on the 1st of April (three days overdue.) I woke up in the night with contractions. At first they were mild, like a period cramp. I got up and moved around some and they slowed down.
I spent the night sort of sleeping, sort of timing the contractions. At five am they were about five to four minutes apart and I had to some what breath through the contractions. So at about six thirty I called Joy. (Midwife)

She came down and checked me and told me I was 100% effaced and 1 cm dilated. HURRAH! But she told me to take a bath, and try to sleep. It was the last thing in the world I wanted to do, but I obeyed and sure enough the contractions slowed and stopped and I slept for a couple of hours. And when she came back to check me at noon, turns out I wasn’t 100% effaced.. My bag of waters was bulging out making it so I seemed further along then I was.
All that day I had contractions off and on. And then the stopped. I was so bummed out. The weekend passed and then Monday. Tuesday night comes and as we were watching Baby Mamma, the contractions came and were harder and sharper. I made it to about 11 PM and then called Joy to see if this was finally it.

She came and checked me and I was still the same effacement and dilation. But because the contractions were more intense and I couldn’t get them to go away, we decided to go to Fairbanks to the birth center where I was going to deliver, which is about and hour and half away.

Then we got there. No dice. I wasn’t in “active labor” which is such a disheartening phrase! HATE IT!
I cried and cried and cried. We went to the Fairbanks house and I got into the shower and sobbed for a LONG time. The worst part was I couldn’t sleep because the contractions continued every five to ten to twenty minutes. And they were so intense that I couldn’t lay or sit through them. I had to move. I would sit on the ground leaning up against an arm chair and try to sleep and get a contraction, get up, sway about, breath and want to die.

And this continued for three more nights. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were probably the worst nights/days of my life. And Dan’s life too, poor guy. I couldn’t sleep longer then twenty sometimes thirty minutes before I would wake up to a contraction. They were impossible to ignore or dampen with pain meds. Through the nights, I would walk around the living room looking over at the hospital right across the street and think, “I could just walk over and get an epidural or a c-section and be done. I wouldn’t even need to wake anyone up.” But I didn’t.

One particularly awful night, Dan got down on his knees and prayed for about an hour.
Even though, at the time I felt SO alone, like God wasn’t helping me at all, it was so comforting to have a husband there, trusting God, solid and not wavering in his trust that God would help us.
We had gotten visions for our birth after a long drawn out discussion of what we should do. Go to Fairbanks, have a home birth etc. After a lot of praying we both felt the clinic was were we should be.
I felt it very strongly and I really couldn’t even vocalize why I felt that way. And then we got the visions.

I saw some trees in a forest. All of the trees looked healthy, and I could see that it was almost springtime, because all of the trees were full of buds, about to bloom. Then I saw two trees that stood out from the rest, because these two trees looked younger than the others. I could see that there two trees also had buds, but they were not as large as the ones on the other trees. Then I saw a white dove, and it was flying over the two young trees. Finally I saw that the dove would land first on one of the trees, and then on the other. As this happened, the tree would grow a little and the buds that were on the tree became fuller. As the vision ended, I saw that the dove continued to land on the two trees, and the buds on them, looked like they were about to burst, and I knew that these two trees would be beautiful, when they were in full bloom.

Donna Gomez

I saw this Couple in a sailing vessel. The water was calm, the atmosphere still. The vessel was going nowhere, but they seemed content with that. --- Time passed; a gentle breeze was ushering in a greater wind. This Couple readied the sails and the vessel began to move forward slowly. In a short while, it was erratically turning to the right and to the left, having no forward thrust. This Couple hurried to inspect the condition of the vessel, seeking to fix the problem. --- As the vision ended, this Couple found sails they had forgotten to lift. As each sail went up, the wind instantly filled it. When all the sails were up, their vessel moved straight forward with great speed. The atmosphere around this Couple was that of joy beyond description.

Irene Conrad

I saw this couple very active with their hands working and their feet on the move. Their activities were beneficial to others, but the Lord was calling them to a quiet place with Him to reveal His purpose. When He had their full attention, He told them they were to look deep within their hearts and bring up any issues they were not fully revealing - to Him (although He already knew of them, but wanted them to speak it out) - and to each other. It was a very holy time because there was no condemnation or judgment. It brought a deeper understanding to one another and it was a cleansing before the Lord. He just wanted their hearts pure before Him and one another. Because of their busyness, they were not taking the time with Him to have this happen. His light was penetrating the very depths of their hearts. They could feel the release of a heaviness they didn't even realize they had. There was a bonding taking place with all three that would not be easily broken, if they stayed open with Him and one another. He told them now their work would be even more effective and their love for one another would be more pure.

The one about the boat, REALLY bothered me. And as the days went by with no baby or rest and just endless nights and days of pain and frustration, I kept asking the Lord what the STUPID sail that we forgot to raise was.

Thursday night I was in the shower again and I was praying again, crying out to the Lord to just speak to me. Something. Anything. The answer was so clear, it was almost audible. He told me to have purpose. To not just let the birth happen to me, but to direct myself.

And so I got down to it. I stopped feeling sorry for myself and started telling my body and the baby that it was time.
“We are going to do this. It’s time for you to come out. We are made to do this. Let’s make it happen. We have what we need. Let's get it done.”
And sure enough, contractions picked up. They got more intense and closer together. About five minutes apart, a little less. At about three we called Joy and she checked me again and found I was effacing, but not dilating much. But she decided to go to the clinic, as they have deep tubs and I need some help at that point, having been up for three days with no sleep longer then thirty minutes at a time.

We got to the clinic at about six and into the gloriously deep, wide tube. SUCH relief! I was so exhausted at this point, I could barely think at all, let alone think straight. I needed Dan SOOOO badly and he was SUCH an awesome support. He sat beside the tub and held my hand, talked to me and at one point we put on worship music from home and he sang to me.
Joy came in at seven and told me that she had called David and asked for prayer and everyone was gathered together praying for me.

And that is when I felt the “help and being lifted by prayer.” It was almost tangible. I felt lifted and strengthened and it was so moving, I sat there in the tub, having contractions, singing worship songs and crying, wondering at what an incredibly caring God I serve.

I Labored in the tub until nine am when Joy checked me again. I found out later that I hadn’t dilated at all. But she kept her fingers in my cervix while I had several contractions and stretched me as I contracted. I went to a four almost five and then we went on from there, the contractions getting more intense and painful. I got back into the tub and kept working, trying to be effective and not fall asleep between contractions. I WAS SOOOOOOO tired!! I drank lots of Recharge, (good stuff) and ate some Skittles for sugar and kept drinking tons of water. It seemed endless. We put on a story to occupy our minds with something besides the birth.
My mom arrived at this point and Dan had a bit of break.

Joy was concerned that he wasn’t in a good position so at one point, she had Dan lift up on my belly to get baby into a better position through TEN contractions. It was SO painful and Dan, was behind me holding up the belly. I started feeling drops of water on my shoulder and realized he was crying. The poor guy hated seeing me in so much pain.

At One, she had me get out and checked me again. I hadn't dilated any more, so we did the stretching again. Which hurt like hell. I went from a four to a seven with her stretching my cervix through each contraction. Then my water broke and all hell broke loose as it were. I went into transition almost immediately. I felt totally incapable of handling the pain of the contractions, which were really close together. There was Meconium in the water and I got a little concerned. I kept thinking, “I need to get this baby out!” The pain was intense, and though I never screamed I was definitely very vocal through each contraction. Joy had me get back into the tub and with in half an hour I was having the irresistible urge to push.

So I started pushing in the tub. FOR EVER!!!!!!!! Well really only 30 minutes. I went from a seven to fully dilated in 30 min. Then the rest of the team got there. There were two other midwives and then my sister. Unfortunately I wasn’t making much progress, so Joy had me get out of the tub and sit on the birthing stool for a while to see if I could move the head down. Then when I wasn't making anymore progress she had me get onto the bed on my back and had the other MWs lift my legs so I could "rock the baby under the pubic bone." Then back onto the birthing stool, where I pushed forever, and then the baby's heart beat started to go down hill. So back to the bed. I pushed a bunch there and the heart tones got a lot better. Then Joy started using a hot compress and stretching me as I pushed. It felt SO much better.

It took every ounce of strength I had and at one point on the birthing stool I asked them to pray again because I was so out of gas. They immediately obliged and I kept pushing.

I then got BACK onto the birthing stool and finally started feeling the head come down. I kept reaching in to feel it and encourage myself that the baby was really right there. I just needed to push a little harder. SO I pushed a little harder and kept pushing. They wanted me to hold my breath, push really hard, take “catch breaths” and keep pushing.
It was very difficult. I was straining every muscle in my body, pushing with every ounce of energy I had left. And finally I felt the head move down.
I was never so relieved in my whole life as when I felt that head coming through "the ring of fire"

It hurt tons, but to be honest, I can’t recall the actual sensation. I know fully that it was painful, but already being in so much pain, it wasn’t a big step up. And I was finally getting my baby out!!!!! I got his head out in two or three pushes then needed a couple more to get the body out. Though Joy was pulling on him pretty hard because he was in distress.

He finally came out, but he was breathing really badly and so they went to work on him right away trying to clear his lungs and sucking stuff out of his airways. They gave him oxygen and then started doing mouth to mouth and kept working on him.
At some point I asked what he was since no one had said. My sister chuckled and told me it was a boy. I held him for a second, but he wasn't responding or waking up so they kept going. (At this point another midwife came in to help... so yes a total of four midwives.) Joy had already called 911 by this time and because the hospital is literally like three minutes from the clinic, the medics were there in no time and the room REALLY filled up with people.

I was on the floor wrapped in a blanket and towel and two midwives were with me and several with Jackson (baby) and then there were four medics who came and got the baby and my husband and took them to the hospital. I stayed at the clinic, delivered the placenta and the blood etc. When Cory asked me if I could get back up on the stool to push out the afterbirth, I just sighed and was like, “it’s so unfair to have to do this.” I couldn’t actually stand at all and was basically lifted onto the stool. I literally could not push out the afterbirth. But Cory just pulled gently and because they had given me a shot of pitocin right after he came out, I was able to contract and she pulled it out. What I really hated was having her kneed on my belly to get the blood clots out. But she did and they were all pushed out.

They helped me onto the bed and got me covered and warmed. I got settled and finally realized I could call Dan on his cell and find out what was happening. When I called he told me baby was already doing much better. Breathing and pinking up nicely.

Then Josiah, Joy’s husband brought us dinner. I ate some food and talked with my mom & sister & two of the midwives. I told them about the word the Lord had spoken to me that morning and how excited I was to have Him answer so clearly when I needed a word so badly.
Karen was really excited too because Josh had brought opening that morning about the one thing that the Lord requires of us, whatever that thing it, that is necessary for us to make progress.
I had such a piece this whole time. Through all the turmoil and hecticness of the last two hours, I was totally confident that the baby was going to be fine, that the Lord had His hand on me and Dan and Jackson and I didn’t need to fear.

Even when I look back on it, there is still such an overpowering feeling peace. I have never experienced anything like it. No fear, when there was every reason to fear. I contribute this wholly to the Lord. It’s certainly not natural to not be afraid. Joy told me later that my peace was what kept her calm. It was the first time she’s had to resuscitate a baby that it didn’t respond.

I had to wait about two hours before I could get into a car and go see my baby. It was so special to finally hold him when I got to the hospital. I held him and loved him and I got to nurse him.
Two of my favorite memories are getting into the shower at the hospital and sitting there, hurting, but just a tired hurt, and feeling it all wash away. The sweat, the pain, the frustration, the anxiety. I shaved my legs and got all clean and it was such a sweet time to think and reflect and be grateful.

The other was that night, being so sore, I couldn’t even cough, thinking about how covered I was by the Lord and the midwives and my family. I laid there in bed resting with NO contractions for the first time in days, singing the worship songs and thanking the Lord, knowing he had lead us and directed us and kept us all safe.

So I was in "active labor" for only 11 hours, but really in labor for DAYS before. I had pushed for over two hours, which felt like an eternity. It was not what I expected, but I had the BEST team around me and everyone was really great at helping me deal with the pain and get through it. And I have never been as sore as I was the next day. Even my lungs and esophagus hurt. :)

The baby, Jackson Douglas was 8 lbs 10 oz. 22.5 " long with a 14.5" head. Which is why it took my so long to get him out. Joy also told me that she thought my body didn't want to dilate on it's own because of the D&C I had with my ectopic. I don't doubt that if I had had the baby in the hospital, I would have ended up with a c section.

So that’s the story and I’m so happy that it happened and at some point will do it again.

Jackson

Jackson. Jackson Douglas Winston. The little boy that I love SO much. I am currently in awe of how much this little muffin and changed since that chilly afternoon in April when he FINALLY decided to come out. What a fabulous boy. He is constantly changing. He now sits up and grabs and drools and laughs and of course cries. He strokes my hand when I nurse him and runs his fingers up and down my chest and face. He's so sweet and yet full of fire and the desire to have his own way.
I am currently going to write out my birth story. Just as a way to remember all the amazingness of that day.
Oh how I love my Jackson boy.:)

DISCOMFORT!!

I am so flipping uncomfortable! Oh well, it will only be another six, to eight weeks. I can do it!!! GRRRRRR! Grit teeth, clench fists...
In other news, Andrew Giles is here doing a college course and he did service on Sat. It was SO good and I want to write a bit of it down so I don't forget. He talked about how we MUST have a day to day, hour to hour relationship with the Holy Spirit, who is the one who teaches us to come into complete communion with God. How we have to utilize the spirit, to get the help we must have. There was a lot more and I'll write it in my journal, but I just wanted to remember.
I am so tired though that I can't put two thoughts together. Uhg... here's to waking up at five.. yuck!

Baby baby baby

Yes, I have been pretty much thinking exclusively about the baby. The dreams that I've had about this baby have been so interestingly weird! Hopefully when this baby actually gets here, they will stop. It's also been an eye opener to see how strongly people feel about their opinions about what is right and what is wrong in birthing, parenting etc.
For instance a simple thing like scheduling your baby. You can either be an idiot for not scheduling your baby, or a complete child abuser and naive to think that you should try to get your baby to sleep through the night. Oh and circumcision. Did you know that if you circumcise your baby boy, you not only don't think your baby is good enough the way he was born and needs improving, but he'll hate you forever and feel totally mutilated because of what you did. OH and because "most everyone is not circumcising" that means you should go with the popular tide.
I will say that the decisions Dan & I make for our baby are going to be based on what we think is right and hopefully be lead by the Holy Spirit. He's the only one who really has all the answers and he certainly can give us what we need to be the parents we need to be.
And we are going to circumcise our child if it's a boy. SO there!!! :) I had to say that here because I would get lynched for saying it on the forums.
I am really getting excited about having the baby. I wish I could just get to it and not have to wait and wait and wait...... It will happen. It has too. Some day the baby will be here.. HURRAH!

"Forth and fear no darkness!"

That quotation has been ringing in my head since last night when once again, I was not able to fall asleep. I quite literally tear up every time I think about it. (The quote.) "FORTH! and fear NO darkness!" The Lord really can speak through anything, even a novel. Though The Lord of the Rings really is much more than a novel. I can't really even describe why this quote seems to be meaning SO much to me at the moment. Maybe it's a preparation for some serious test. I find myself shrinking from the thought that there is great pain ahead and a need to hear a clear voice calling to STAND and not be over taken with fear of the test/night/affliction/fire/darkness/evil. But I do know that if there is such a test around the corner, that I will be able to stand, to go forth, to hold on, to remain and hold fast to the vision. Because of the very fact that the Lord promices not to utterly destroy us in the fire. I'll be burnt and purified and softened and molded, but not destroyed.
There seems to be alot happening in the spirit at the moment. I mean there have been lots of elder's meetings and things have been fairly heavy. I don't know what the meetings are about and who is involved in them, but it seems that something rather serious is happening. No one really seems to know what about. At least those that I have talked to.
We'll see.

Take a sip of tea

Well, I am sitting here sipping my lovely warm beverage. It's really quite nice. Green tea with a some herbal mixed in for flavor.
Recently the winds from "paradise" descended and blew at hurricane force. In fact category two. (Which for you who aren't in the "know" is over 100 mph.) We fortunately didn't lose our roof or have a tree fall on our Wee Nook. I was quite worried about the safety of our external selves when I looked out the window at 1:30 AM and noticed that the trees were in fact no longer standing vertical but quite definitively blowing horizontally. And then all the snow melted and the road departed in a raging river. (All this in January after two weeks of 50 below!)
And now it has snowed a bit and the glare ice that hampered all attempted travelers on the roads, has been safely covered.
We are in the middle of convention, and a very good convention it has proved to be thus far.
The one line that I have been really pondering on, or rather has managed to stay with me through the shear volume of word, is are we begging the Lord for ourselves and for each other.
If I would cry out in a serious way for those I have issues with and those I struggle to love, and even those that I love who I know are struggling, I would be walking in a greater measure of love than I have ever before.
I also loved John Jeffreys word about staying on the cross. Loved is maybe not the right verb, more like it witnessed to my spirit. Though, of course the question now is will I do it. Will I stay on the cross and stop trying to perform some "act" that is not in the plan or purpose of the Lord. It really is about obedience.
Hmmm. Time to go read the bible and pray for people. AND NOT think about me!

I have a pain in my side.

In all actuality, I do have a pain in my side. But I really don't want to talk about it. Or any of the other pains I have.
I want to talk about how happy I am that spring & even summer appear to be coming along. Hurray! I even saw some leaves trying to burst forth this morning walking to the boat dock.
I also want to say that I have been thinking about the current opening subject. About keeping our minds on things above. It's harder than you think. Really it is. Just yesterday I was really having a good day and thinking good thoughts and actually staying in the spirit. Then came a thought about some little sore point (I don't really remember what it was) and I sat there stewing about it and having a big talk with someone in my head, which is always stupid. OH I know what it was, it was about John D and how he tries to evangelize to everyone here and convince them that what they are doing here isn't really making them happy and how awesome and totally rad it is in his church and how FANTASTIC his life is now that he's escaped the evil commune. Anyway, as you see it bothers me, but I don't need to meditate on it or have a non existent conversation with him in my head.
It doesn't do him any good and I am stuck thinking rude thoughts about someone instead of taking the Lords view of him and his situation.
Not that I think the Lord's view is always good, but I do know that He tells us NOT to be judgmental of others, and as Bill says not to hammer the gavel. He's doing things that we have no concept of knowing or understanding, so leave the problem to him.
I have also been thinking what Kathy Owens said about the Lord being our husband and treating him that way. I was thinking of how if every time Dan wanted to be intimate with me I found something else to do, we would have very bad marriage.
It really changed my perspective a great deal.
We have been praying more together and reading the bible together like we should. It's been really good.
I know that the only way we will have any sort of marriage will be if we look to the Lord together and individually, and if we flee from selfishness and pride.
It's hard to not let pride separate. It's a real tribute to Don & Debbie that Dan HATES being divided. He fights for unity with all his heart. It's harder for me, but I know how important it is.
Anyway, I am looking forward to running today. Hopefully the sun will last and I will get to be outside. Same for tomorrow. Especially since I have to run eight miles tomorrow. NO MORE TREADMILL for a while.
Yeah!

I can go the distance

I have chosen and decided all on my own, that I am going to run distance. YES! I started about a month ago and have gotten up to eight miles at a timea and 20 mi per week. Very minor when you go to the running sites on the web and look at people running 50 + MPW. WOW, to be like them. Well, they also have way too much time.
My goal, is to get up to 16 miles (in one run) by June and then see. I don't want to commit to the marathon quite yet.
But I do want to do 30+ MPW on a regular basis.
I have to say that the runs, I have had recently haven't been the best, but that might be because I've been fighting an infection as well as some sort of stomach viras.
(So rude for my body to do that to me.)
Today, I am going to run 4, which should be simple enough, though it could be more difficult then usual because I am going to run the road up the bluff hill.... So good for the legs.
In other news, my birthday is in three days. Yeah hurray. Though to tell the truth I am really not that excited about it.
The good thing, however, is that I am going to have a really yummy dinner with my babe. He's going to grill steak and I am going to prepare shrimp...(YUM!!) and it will be delightful. Unfortunately there will be no alcohol because the treatment for the afore mentioned infection states that mixing alcohol and the drug could cause sever sickness... yuck!
And, uhm let me see.......
Ok, that's it. I need to get back to regularly schedualed programs....

PS The best books EVER

Ok, maybe not ever, but definitely ones that I have enjoyed totally and completely and really want to read for a third time, just so I can experience them again. They are called: The Thief, The Queen of Atolia and the The King of Atolia. They are by Megan Whalen Turner. And anyone who reads this blog, should DEFINITELY go out and purloin them by any means and read them. I am trying to spread the word to all I can. The plot it marvelous! And they are just VERY enjoyable. All I can tell you about the book is that the main character's name is Eugenides and the stories are like a fictional historical, semi Greek noval. Eugenides is a thief and he is taken from prison to go steel a gift from the gods. It's so good! I can't tell you anymore then that, else I ruin it for you.
Please read it, it's wonderful!

The Return of the Vest

Oh rejoice all ye who can cry out for the vest that was once lost has been found again!!!! YEAH!!!!! I am very happy about this. It is the best thing that has happened for a while. I lost a certain down vest a year and a half ago. Though to be completely acurate, I didn't infact lose it. It was removed from where I had left it by some twerp and sent to the clothing bank, whereby before I ever saw it, it was removed to someones closet. I am so pleased that it has come to light that I will forgive all and rejoice souly in my newly found old beloved vest!
Oh and there are other good things happening too. I just don't want to talk about them yet.
And no I am not pregnant. YEAH!
